You may wonder, how many men does it take to deliver a letter? Well the answer is, 8 mayors and 100 councillors. Well, that's what the JLP would have us believe anyway.
A JLP group of 8 mayors and 100 councillors was marching to the Office of the Prime Minister to deliver a letter expressing their concerns about the failure of the local government ministry to allocate enough money to repair roads damaged during the recent hurricanes. Their march began at Devon House, and as they approached Jamaica House, they were tear-gassed by the local police force.
One police officer stated that the opposition representatives were warned in advance that they were not allowed to march within 200 yards of the P.M.'s officer, but they did so anyway. Thus, he said, the police acted in accordance to the law. However, the 108, including KSAC Mayor Desmond McKenzie (who had to be treated in hospital after the incident), say this isn't so. "It speaks volumes when you are walking on the street to deliver a letter and come under attack by the police from Devon House....700 metres away from Jamaica House," the Mayor said.
Now, Mr. Mayor also contends that the group meant to cause no trouble, but simply wanted to deliver their letter. Apparently, they've never heard of the post office, or email, or the courier. And in the unfortunate event that they haven't, did they ever consider the possiblity of sending ONE person with the letter? Councillors and mayors left their respective posts from all around the island, putting the country's business on hold so that they could all deliver one piece of paper. 'No trouble' my foot! It is quite obvious that the party was trying to create a scene, for whoever's benefit.
On the flip side, if the police tell the truth, they DID act within the constraints of the law. However, is it at all possible that the men who are armed with guns and knives and murdering citizens are more of an imminent threat than a JLP gang armed with an envelope? Seems that way to me. Despite the actions of the party representatives, perhaps tear-gassing was a little unnecessary.
Conclusion? Break out the 'stupid' sign, and pass it around! They're alot of people who need it!

I'm sorry, but I cannot get over the police force tear gassing a group of people (I don't care WHO) WALKING!. I don't care if they want to call it a march or a rally. They are unarmed men... WALKING! That is just plain ridiculous and I agree completely with the statement made by the Mayor
It seems the mayor took it kinda hard. I guess he not used to being on that end of the tear gas which he has had the police carry with them when he has them there to enforce his sign removals.
It also shows that they don't take their jobs seriously if they can walk away from it after Dr. Blossom O'mealy-Nelson has done such wonders for our postal system. They didn't trust the postal service?
Or maybe it was the postale union who were not amused at being bypassed. They called out the police and asked them to act so harshly.
